Oakley Foundational Technology

OAKLEY FOUNDATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

High Definition Optics® isn’t about lenses, well not completely. It’s a full system where the goal is a visual experience that has minimal distortions. That’s the real name of the game – virtually distortion free. That’s what’s truly at the heart of optimal clarity of the HDO system, doing what we can to keep your brain from having to work overtime.

To do that we created a visual system built on three key pillars: Vision, Protection, and Fit. When these three areas combine, they work in concert to create a system that is designed to keep every pair of Oakley eyewear planted where it needs to be to let you see and optimize the way you experience the world.

Prizm™ Lens Technology

Prizm™ Lens Technology doesn’t filter light, it tunes the light around you, revealing a more vivid, more vibrant world – or more technically catering 'the what' that you should or shouldn't see. Turning down some colors, turning up others, a little nip here, a little nudge there until colours are separated enough to enhance contrast where you’ll need it most.

Plutonite™

Plutonite™ is the material we make our lenses from. It sounds like alien technology and it kind of is, but alien tech made by humans. It’s an ideal polycarbonate for our usage – one that's light, it’s formable, it stops harmful UV rays and fast-moving objects. Oh, and it’s clear, like unnaturally clear. Well, not something that occurs naturally on this planet anyway.

O-Matter™

O-Matter™ is this kind of miracle that only science can create. It’s strong, but not too strong; flexible, but not too flexible; rigid, but not too rigid. Allowing our eyewear to hold the lens where it needs to be, minimizing distortion, while gripping your head, but not gripping it so hard your head hurts. (Though, your head might hurt from reading that.)

Unobtainium®

Not all glasses are built for movement. The second things get fast, physical, sweaty, or unpredictable, some start slipping, bouncing, and demanding your attention. Which is a pretty annoying quality in something designed to help you focus.

That’s where Unobtainium® comes in. This grippy, rubber compound helps keep eyewear comfortably locked in place so your glasses stay put, and your focus stays forward.

Impact Protection

Getting something in your eye doesn't feel great. It hurts extra hard when that thing is heavy or coming in fast. That’s where our system of premium lens and frame materials in our sports-performance eyewear come in handy, exceeding the ANSI Z80.3 industry standard for Impact Protection, which you'll want and need when a rock gets kicked up from the bike in front of you.

Ballistic Protection

Things entering your eyes can really mess you up, especially if they’re travelling at 725fps. Which is why Oakley’s Ballistic lenses* are engineered to take a couple hits from small, fast-flying objects, without reaching your eyes.

*Select models tested to meet or exceed MIL-PRF-32432A ballistic impact standards. No eyewear provides absolute protection.
