The luxury fashion designer Gianni Versace was born in Reggio Calabria,
Italy in 1946. Fashion was always a prominent part of family life and
following an apprenticeship at his mother's dressmaking business, Versace
began working independently as a freelance designer. Renowned for his
luxury, elite and high end creations, by the age of 25, Versace was creating
prêt-à-porter collections for top fashion houses of that era, including Genny,
Complice and Callaghan.

In 1978, Versace founded the Gianni Versace brand and the first Gianni Versace collection for women was presented in Milan.
