The Return Of Tom Ford

Tom Ford sunglasses are the business. Always oversized and generally rocking a retro vibe they are the celebrity’s shade of choice. Universally loved by Hollywood’s leading ladies (and men), Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have all been snapped modelling Tom Ford shades in recent months.

Nicholas Hoult has become the poster boy for Tom Ford sunglasses, since starring in Ford’s Directorial Debut, ‘A Leading Man’. Alongside his female sidekick Carolyn Murphy, his face is regularly splashed across the fashion glossies and billboards. It’s certainly been an interesting career trajectory since his geeky turn in Nicholas Parson’s ‘About a boy’!

Tom Ford is primarily known for his menswear and accessories but this year he shocked the fashion world by throwing a surprise ‘Cocktail Party’ which was in fact designed to reveal his first womenswear collection in 6 years. Top fashion folk were invited to the ‘Cocktail Party’ which was held in New York and had all the hallmarks of a Fifties couture show. Ford asked women that inspired him to model his spring/summer ‘11 collection, among them were; Beyonce Knowles, Julianne Moore, Daphne Guinness, Lauren Hutton and Amber Valetta.  Ford commented “I want to concentrate on real women and the real customer. It’s all about individuality, individual style, different body types, women who have their own style.” One official photographer was present to avoid press leaks and its rumoured photos of the show will not be released until January next year!

tfSuch secrecy has created even more of a buzz about Tom Ford. If this story is anything to go by then every woman in the fashion-know is going to have Tom Ford on her radar! As is always the case designer clothes are way beyond our budget, but thankfully with a little scrimping and saving, designer sunglasses are not! With this year and next, seemingly obsessed with all things vintage, Tom Ford sunglasses are the perfect label to hit the retro mark. There are so many different styles and most of them are beautifully oversized which was such a common trait in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

Thankfully the sun hasn’t disappeared just yet and there’s always the need for the perfect pair of shades to take you through the winter. In order to be bang on the money for next year’s big trends we’d suggest investing in a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses and you won’t be disappointed!

Antique Chic

June 29, 2008

Never has vintage been more in vogue. Second-hand shops are flinging open their well-oiled doors, vintage fashion fairs are on the up, and sites like ebay have made stepping back in time to source some classic clothing as easy as pie.

But if you feel a bit funny about slipping into your Grandma’s prom dress, try her dancing shoes instead, because one area that vintage really flourishes in is accessories. From sunglasses to stoles, belts to brooches, heels to handbags; the possibilities are endless. And the best thing about vintage is you’ll never turn up at a party wearing the same outfit as someone else!

It’s also a great way to adapt new trends. OK, so that cinched in waisted belt might not be brand spanking new, but it lends itself to the 50s vibe a treat, just as a pair of 70s platform courts could easily be paired with any of today’s ditsy floral prints. As for sunglasses, Jackie O’s are as popular now as they were in their heyday, as are Rayban Wayfarers, so why not search out an original pair?

Alternatively if you’re looking for a one-off set of sunnies to make you stand out from the crowd, check out Shadestation’s very own vintage selection. With authentic, never-to-be-worn designs from designers including Christian Dior, GianFranco Ferre and Porshe Carrera, you won’t have to worry about cheap counterfeits ever again. And despite coming in at over £100 each, remember to work out your budget as cost per wear - even if you only shade your peepers from the sun once a week, it amounts to less than £10 from now until Autumn – bargain or what?

Forget shabby chic, to checkout the ultra luxe vintage collection, click on the below link.

A 1950’s revival

May 20, 2008

When it comes to fashion we all need a little inspiration from time to time. For us, the humble fashion follower, we have the trend setters to do most of the hard work in setting the scene for the lastest season’s fashions. However, even designers need the occasional muse, proof in the unmistakable 1950’s theme rocking the S/S08 runway.

The likes of Gucci have honoured the decade with their ‘rockabilly chic’ theme and Chanel have brought a hint of the Riviera with nautical designs that owe inspiration to the 1950’s and 1960’s sex kitten, thus taking us back in time to an era where looking perfectly polished and glamorous at all times was of the utmost importance. An era where leaving the house without those necessary final accessory details was a cardinal fashion sin, and so it’s never been a better time to ‘Think Pink’….. Come on girls, we’ve all recited that famous phrase from Grease in the pretence that we are as cool as Rizzo or as innocent as Sandra D, well now’s our chance to literally step into their shoes!

What’s more, the 1950’s saw our imagination take flight in the Fifties as we began to lose our inhibitions and embrace designs that had style and humour to match our lifted post-war spirits. At this time spectacles and sunglasses became much more than functional objects as wings and diamantes were used as decoration. So, come on, lets pay homage to our grandparents and ditch the plain and boring eyewear in favour of wild and wacky shaped frames, get your bling on with twinkling diamantes and be bold and brave with bright colours. But don’t forget the rule, its great to experiment but just make sure your chosen frames still make the most of your fabulous features!
