It’s a Flouro Summer!

April 21, 2011

Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 17.49.36

Following a recent jaunt around London’s luxury west end (window shopping naturally), it became obvious that fluorescent clothing and accessories are one of the key looks this season. As lurid as it may sound, half the designers on New and Old Bond Street have said it’s so… DKNY, Micheal Kors, Hermes, Miu Miu and Dolce & Gabbana have all embraced the trend with eye popping day glo window displays. It’s not often that sunglasses are required on an overcast Spring evening, but the windows of W1 were awash with acid colours so bright, dark lenses were entirely necessary!

We draw the line at luminous clothing (some things are best kept in the Eighties) however we can totally get on board with accents of fluorescent colour, if fashion demands it! So how best to wear the acid look? Accessories – including bags, sunglasses, watches, jewellery and shoes, are your best bet (see recent pics of Sienna Miller in her neon shoes or The Saturdays in their LTD Watches). A flash of luminous colour ensures you’re up to date and embracing the trend, but doesn’t scream fashion victim.

This look is great for the summer and particularly successful at festivals. Designer neon sunglasses are fairly hard to come by and you tend to have to buy cheap to wear day-glo shades, but concessions can be made with this fad and colourful sunnies will cut the mustard too… Brands like Carrera and Diesel are perfect for a slice of colour popping. The ‘Thor’ Carrera sunglasses are particularly bright with frames in clear bright pink, purple and blue and a further look through the collection reveals exciting designs with an array of colourful lenses and styles. For a slightly more feminine approach, both Marc Jacobs and Pucci sunglasses, incorporate plenty of colour and look fashionable to boot.

When it comes to watches, no colour is bright enough or too acidic! Like a little piece of sunshine on your wrist, neon watches are playful and hugely on trend this summer. Sporty brands like Adidas, Baby G and Casio, use bright colours often throughout their collections and LTD watches are colour saturated. But for pure fluorescent adulteration new brand Gio-Goi watches is the answer! In shades of neon – green, pink, yellow, orange and blue – these bold watches embrace this seasons flouro trend to a tee!

So the moral is; Accessorise your outfits this Spring / Summer with bursts of fluorescent colour, rather than an all-over neon tan, to avoid looking like an Eighties reject!

Tom Ford- Fashioning a new direction

February 8, 2010
Posted by David

Internationally successful designers are few and far between and even rarer, are designers that venture into filmmaking. Tom Ford is one such designer. At the helm of Gucci from the mid Nineties until 2004, Ford was credited with turning the ailing fashion house into the monster it is today. After parting ways with Gucci, Ford set up his own company ‘Tom Ford’ and began his business designing fabulous sunglasses and eyewear.

Today Ford is one of the worlds most successful and revered designers, however his creative genius has found another outlet in the form of film directing. Ford’s directing debut, ‘A Single Man’, has earnt its lead character, Colin Firth, a ‘Best Actor’ nomination in this year’s Oscars (The 82nd Academy Awards)! Could this be a new career direction for Mr Ford? It seems Tom Ford has the Midas touch. Already popular with the Hollywood A-list, for his beautifully designed clothes and glamorous sunglasses, they’ll all be clamouring for a role in his next movie!

As well as catching Ford’s debut movie at the cinema this spring, get in on a piece of the action with his popular range of Tom Ford sunglasses. Worn by the likes of Angelina Jolie (who was responsible for the popularity of the ‘Whitney’ crossover style sunglasses), J-Lo and Sienna Miller, Tom Ford sunglasses are some of the most fashionable sunglasses worn by celebrities. Ford’s collection of sunglasses is thoughtful and extensive, with styles to suit all face shapes and tastes. Aviator, vintage and oversized frames are all found in the range and anyone looking to enter the spring season looking stylish and on trend should look to Mr Ford for inspiration.

Hot Trend: Tortoiseshell Shades

July 23, 2008
Posted by David

Throughout 2008 we have seen an array of bold and beautiful styles of sunglasses. The latest craze as seen on the celebs is tortoiseshell sunglasses. This is not a fashion first however as they have actually been remarkably on trend for a number of decades, proving that they are a classic style which never really go ‘out of fashion’.

John Kennedy was often seen sporting his tortoiseshell sunglasses and now the modern day actress and fashionista Sienna Miller has regularly been snapped looking fantastic in hers. The style is also gaining much popularity among other celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Reese Witherspoon. Perhaps the reason why the tortoiseshell style sunglasses remain classically stylish is due to the fact that they are extremely versatile and wearable. The colours enable the wearer to dress them up or down and will match most items in your summer wardrobe. A great way to wear the sunglasses is teamed with a flirty white summer dress, gold sandals and accessories.

D&G have a fantastic pair of super stylish tortoiseshell shades as recently seen on the catwalks and there are many high street stores who have created their own versions based upon these. Prada also have a super pair of unisex sunglasses which are classically trendy and look fab on both men and women. Stella McCartney have a beautiful oversized pair which incorporates a sophisticated subtle tortoiseshell pattern if you prefer something slightly less bold.

The great thing about the style is that they look great on everyone, dressed up or casual. Many designer brands are now creating unisex sunglasses means that there could be a few arguments in store about who gets to wear them!

Hot Hair Looks for Summer 2008

June 18, 2008
Posted by David

Summer 2008 is all about accessorising the hair with scarves and hair bands – and the brighter the better! Headscarves are a perfect way to embrace this season’s ethnic style; they are extremely versatile and can be worn in a variety of different ways. For maximum effect, wrap the scarf around your forehead and push over your head, tying under your hair whether tied up or let loose – sweep the fringe and loose hair away from the face and the scarf will delicately frame your features. This style is most effective with a bright or patterned fabric. For a more boho, hippie style look allow the hair to fall around the headscarf and wear with this season’s maxi-dress and gladiator sandals. The headscarf is a fantastic summer accessory which can hide a multitude of hair sins and instantly transforms your look. It is also a great way to experiment with bold vibrant colours and in the summer heat, acts as a hair protector.

One hair trend in particular which has been seen on numerous celebrities such as Micha Barton, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Nicole Ritchie is the 70’s hippie look whereby a thin hair band is worn around the forehead. This look is very simple to achieve and works best with longer, wavy hair. To adapt this look for the evening, wear a metallic, beaded or jewel embellished hair band for an added injection of glamour. Many luxury designers such as Chanel have a gorgeous exquisite selection of hair bands whilst the high street also offers affordable but beautiful options. This look is perhaps not quite so versatile or suited to every day wear but very effective for festivals and summer events.

The colours and designs of hair accessories are typically very feminine and girly but for those more sporty types, neon 80’s colours and accessories are back including the much missed visor. Plain hair bands are also a great option in one block colour such as black and gold and make for a simple, understated yet stylish look.

The key summer hair trend is definitely all about keeping the style natural (yes, put the GHD’s away!) and really dressing the hair up. The use of a simple headband or scarf is a fantastic way of injecting style into casual daywear and glamour for the evening.

Return of the Spartans

June 14, 2008
Posted by David

It could have been dismissed as last season’s trend, but the Gladiator sandal has continued to make its mark in the category of must-have summer sandals.

At the start of spring it was all a bit touch and go, and those of us who’d bought into the foot fashion last summer were unsure as to whether we should be slipping our feet back into our Spartan sandals or if we were expected to steer clear. But then, as if by magic, the celebrities started stepping out; paving the way and continuing to stamp their approval on the Roman revolution.

Rather than an array of flats though, this season, footwear designers have pulled out all the stops and we’ve been plied with knee-high straps, tassle-tastic embellishments, leather discs, rope plaits and most shocking of all – high heels!

One celeb who can’t get enough Gladiator glory is Miss Gwyneth Paltrow. From Giuseppe Zanotti flats to sky high Givency ankle boots, her tootsies haven’t seen the likes of a filled-in shoe for quite some time. Also keen on the Colosseum craze are Kate Moss, Lindsay Lohan and Sienna Miller to name a few, and just last week Elle MacPherson was seen dropping her kids off at school in a pair – true model mum behaviour.

If you’re keen to put your best foot forward in some thongs, take into account your size and shape. If you’ve got long legs, you’ll be able to pull off the knee high styles no problem, but if you’ve got slightly shorter legs, a lower pair will be more flattering. Then it’s up to you to mix and match them with jeans, dresses and shorts – all of which work a treat with the trend. Colour-wise, metallic shades add to the Mediterranean look, but black and brown versions also add versatility.

The motto of the sandal season then – wear them high or wear them low, just make sure you invest in a pair of Gladiators if you want to keep your footing in the style stakes.

Rainbow Brights

May 9, 2008
Posted by David

Move over Mr Tortoiseshell, the primary colours have come out to play! This season the catwalks were bursting with bold and beautiful frames; from aqua marine blue to sunshine yellow, the runways of Marni, Mulberry, Karl Lagerfield and DKNY were awash with kaleidoscopic colour.

But it’s not just the haute couture designers that are championing the trend, Hollywood celebs are paving the way for face framing fashion too. Sienna Miller has stepped out on more than one occasion in her turquoise rims, trendsetter Mary Kate Olsen has opted for orange, while Victoria Beckham prefers to stand out from the crowd in vibrant yellow. However before you invest in a pair of smartie-coloured sunnies, make sure you know which colours suit you most. If you’d never be seen in green, avoid it like the plague, but if pink is part of your palette, it could be an option for you. Remember to consider your hair and skin colour too. If you have blonde hair, darker frames work a treat so try red or navy, but if you’re brunette, yellows, pinks and whites will complement your features best. Another great advantage to blossom from this love affair with all things bright, is the fact that coloured shades show off a tan a treat – what more could you possibly want?

Spoilt for choice over which colour to wear? The specs of the season Rayban Wayfarers have options in a variety of colours including red and pink, DIOR have a fabulous 60s style pair in red panther and Persol are boasting some in deep blue. If you’re not quite ready to brave the brights, baby pink provides a happy medium but if you really can’t face colour, try white instead. Still dazzling enough to make a statement, D&G have a fabulous pair with a pink and chrome cut out.
