Sunglasses Fit For Royalty
With all the hype surrounding the Royal nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton this week, we thought it would be interesting to throw some light on the sunglasses the Royal family favour.
On the whole the young royals are a fairly sporty and active lot, especially Zara Phillips who represents Great Britain in showjumping and is of course engaged to England rugby player, Mike Tindall. Both Princes are keen footballers, skiers and fine polo players and Kate Middleton is well known for her love of sport, whilst Princess Beatrice became the first member of the royal family to run the London marathon last year.
Naturally active types gravitate towards sunglasses designed for optimum sports performance, so it’s no surprise that the Royals are often seen wearing Oakley sunglasses. The Chilean miners wear Oakley Radar sunglasses!
Chilean Miners in Oakley Sunglasses
Oakley don’t miss a trick, if you’ve been following the miners ascent from the collapsed mine in Chile you’ll be well aware that Oakley sunglasses scored a massive coup the day they were rescued.
For 69 days the 33 Chilean miners survived half a mile underground without health care, sanitation and most notably natural light. During their incarceration the miners eye sight would have been weak and authorities were concerned of the damage daylight could have on their retinas once they surfaced. In order to protect the miner’s eyes from the harmful effects of UV light, Oakley entered the mix and donated 35 pairs of supped up, full specification, Oakley Radar sunglasses.
Oakley Radar sunglasses feature a single black Iridium lens that wraps around the eyes, ensuring the utmost protection from the sun’s UV rays, from the side of the face and directly. Oakley is known for its commitment to technology and innovation and their miners Radar sunglasses are coated and protected with all number of highly technical solutions and mastery. The Iridium lenses are combined with a dark grey base to reduce glare, enhanced with a sheath to repel oil, mud and water during the rescue and fitted to accommodate interchangeable lenses to optimise comfort and protection for the miner’s different facial anatomies.
On the 13th October as each miner surfaced, they appeared from the hell hole with a grin of relief, sporting Oakley Radar sunglasses as the world’s press captured the joyous moment 33 times over 24 hours. The coverage Oakley have received for their donation is priceless and the miner’s can be assured their eyes have the best protection for the weeks ahead as they prepare to return to normality. In a show of solidarity the Chilean Minister for Mining asked to wear a spare pair of the Oakley Radar sunglasses.

We all know that Oakley is famous for its sponsorship of world class athletes which also helps the brand establish what the sports industry requires from its products. We can now share that one of these athletes has used his style creativity to help design a unique pair of Oakley sunglasses!
Gold medal winner Shaun White is what can be described as a bit of a rocker in the world of snowboarding and has been a core athlete within the Oakley brand for over ten years – also known for his love of street fashion. Transcending his skills on the slopes to the design board, Oakley has teamed up with Shaun and the result is a new pair of incredibly cool Oakley sunglasses called Holbrook.
Oakley Holbrook Sunglasses Designed By Shuan White
In designing the new Holbrook sunglasses, Shaun (pictured) took inspiration from his passion for iconic male film legends of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s and wanted to capture the essence of American cool and how everyday men rebelled against conformity and inspired the younger generation. The Holbrook sunglasses are his visualisation of that theme and are named after a small town on Route 66 which is notorious of being a town where both grit and glory take place on the wide open road.
In terms of style, the Oakley Holbrook sunglasses boast the classic retro look that Shaun wanted to achieve, with thick frames, arms which begin from the top of the frame and large, defined lenses. In true Oakley style, the sunglasses perfectly combine that vintage appeal with contemporary and innovative technologies!
The Holbrook sunglasses feature a stress-resistant frame made of the signature Oakley lightweight synthetic O Matter and are aesthetically emphasised with metal bolts at the top corners of the frames to add to the ‘gritty’ style. The lenses incorporate the unique Oakley High Definition Optics (HDO) with pure Plutonite lenses that filter out 100% of all UV light (not just UVA and UVB). All of these advanced technologies ensure optical precision, impact resistance and maximum eye protection.
In a range of different colours (frames and lenses) to choose from, the new Oakley Holbrook sunglasses look incredibly stylish, successfully portraying the theme that Shaun wanted to capture and are a completely unique model within the Oakley sunglasses collection.
