Timex Watches – The History

Timex watches are one of the classic watch brands and were first launched in the 1949. The company originally began as the Waterbury Clock company, which produced the first affordable timepieces in America in the 1850’s. Over the years, the Waterford Clock company evolved into the Waterbury Watch Company who designed incredibly affordable watches. However, when the Great Depression hit America in the 1940’s, this company was bought out by the U.S. Time Company who were then responsible for the production of Timex watches.

During the Second World War, watches with mechanical timing were highly in demand and thus the first range of Timex wristwatches launched in 1950 had incredibly precise timing and reliability to cater for this need. The company was generating a huge volume of sales with their Timex watches and as time progressed and the brand became more profitable, they invested in advertising to further raise their profile. Memorable ads include those featuring John Cameron Swayze who carried out live watch torture /durability tests on television.  The most famous advertising line for Timex is ‘takes a licking and keep on ticking‘. It was at this point that Timex watches were one of every three purchased in the United States.

Timex remained a firm favourite and it seemed that every household owned at least one Timex watch. Over the next thirty years over 500 million mechanical Timex watches were sold and the brand was the most popular in America. However at this point, competition was beginning to surface and Timex was forced to keep up with style and mechanical trends. In the 1980’s the brand changed its name to Timex Corporation and introduced new digital watches entitled the ‘Ironman Triathlon’ which were geared for sports and athletes. As the brand already had a loyal consumer base, this new watch also became extremely popular and actually became the country’s best selling watch. Over the next two decades, Timex continued their excellent reputation through the launch of further innovate designs. They introduced electroluminescent watch faces and this is a feature which has continued through to the watches today in the form of the brand’s Indiglo night light. Moving with the technologies extra features were added to Timex watches including calendars, organisers. In the 1990’s, the company collaborated with Microsoft and Motorola in joint ventures to produce other complex watches and pagers.

Timex is still an incredibly popular brand today and has a great combination of watches including some fun and colourful versions for kids such as the Timex Kids Analogue which come in a wide array of colour tones and pattens. The objective of the brand has always been to produce affordable watches with functionality and the new Timex models include smarter watches with multi-functions such as the Timex Core Digital, sports specific watches which include speed and distance calculations and health monitors such as the Timex Tradition 10 Lap Full watch, and Timex E-Instruments watches which are geared towards measuring the temperature of the surf, and predicting tide times.

Timex has existed for a number of decades and has continued to excel over many other brands. By providing a great range of fun, stylish, versatile and affordable watches with superb function ability, people sincerely trust the brand, knowing that they are investing in a high quality and reliable watch that won’t break the bank.

Interior design buffs will be more than familiar with the name Philippe Starck. One of the most influential contemporary designers of the noughties era, Parisian-born artist Starck has wowed consumers with everything from super-sleek hotel designs to artefacts and interiors, and now he’s made his moved into the foray of watch-wear.

The son of an aircraft designer, Starck set up his first company in 1968 producing inflatable objects and since then, he’s continued to be influenced by the world of fashion and popular culture. To date, he’s created mineral-water bottles for Glacier, kitchen appliances for Alessi, luggage for Louis Vuitton and Samsonite and computer gadgets for Microscoft, as well as his most recent collaboration with Fossil watches.

Believing that all his products should be simple, efficient and durable – with stunning design and practicality, Starck’s watches are as far away from your traditional watch as you can get. Undeniably modernistic and striking to the eye, they all boast high-design features, but without taking anything away from the practicality of the watch, making them robust in both wear and stylishness. Offering men’s, women’s and unisex styles, choose from electroplated bracelet designs, cross shaped rubber cuff designs with digital time-telling and the O-Ring Digi watch to name a few. The latter, rather space-age style uses a see-through ring-shaped display, rather like a polo-mint to show the time with hours shown as numbers and minutes as segments. If a more standard-display watch tickles your fancy, there’s plenty of those too, although they still have one-off design elements guaranteeing your watch will still become the talk of the town.
