Burberry Catwalk – London Fashion Week 2013 | Shade Station Visits
Here at Shade Station we are lucky enough to be invited to some of the most prestigious events in the fashion calendar and this week we have been down in London for the Burberry Catwalk at London Fashion Week! This was a strictly invite only affair, so we were privileged to be invited along to take a look at the brand new Autumn/Winter 2013 Burberry Sunglasses collections due to be big hitters in 2013. the strikingly named ‘Trench Kisses’ collection featured everything from Macs, through to their new sunglass range and it is these beautiful pieces of eyewear that really caught our attention. The idea of ‘Trench Kisses’ was inspired by 1960’s pin up girl, Christine Keeler whose affair with John Profumo (the Secretary of State for War at the time), could have ruined the British government.
The new 2013 Autumn/Winter Burberry Sunglasses looked amazing on the catwalk and the ‘cheeky’ nature of Christine Keeler crept into the designs where ever you looked. A selection of different styles are going to be available, including the classic teardrop, goggle effect, cats-eye, squared-off and visor; all of which incorporate Burberry’s ethos of encouraging adventure amongst young people trying to navigate the uncertain terrain of their age and the complex world in which we live today. The entire show had been organised by Burberry Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey who really outdid his own impeccable standards once again at this year’s London Fashion Week. As soon as we arrived at the magnificent glass building set deep in the heart of Kensington Gardens, we knew we were in for a spectacle and Bailey did not disappoint!
Although we do not have an exact release date for each of these new models as of yet, we are sure to keep you up to date via Facebook and Twitter with any updates as and when we have them!

British Designer Sunglasses at Wimbledon 2011

Wimbledon is upon us once again and as always the nation has it’s hopes pinned on Murray to lift the cup. The championships kick off on Monday 20th June and Andy Murray is entering the tournament as one of the favourites having beaten the No 19 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win Queens a few weeks ago. As a lawn tennis tournament, Queens is often thought to be a good barometer of who’s fit and able to reach the final rounds of Wimbledon, so we Brits have a lot to be hopeful about this year!
The end of last week saw the official draw and Murray has been placed in the same half as Rafael Nadel and starts his assault on the Championship against Seed no 56, Daniel Gimeno-Traver. The big news however is the random selection of John Isner against Nicolas Mahut in the first round again. Tennis fans will recall the duo playing in 2010’s record-breaking first round match, lasting 11 hours and 5 minutes!
The weather forecast is looking rather drab for the first week, however reports are for fine weather over the first weekend and into the second week. Hopefully the sun will linger for the tournament, for this is when Wimbledon really comes into it’s own. Nothing sums up true Britishness quite like a spot of lawn tennis, a jug of Pimms and a punnet of strawberries and cream. This is what Wimbledon is really about – being British.
In the celebration of all things British it seems fitting that this should extend to sunglasses too. Sunglasses are a must at the Championship, whether it’s for sun protection, to conceal a hangover or to avoid being caught staring at celebrities, every Wimbledon-goer must be armed with sunnies. And why not a British designer? Shade Station have wonderful sunglasses from some of the British greats, including the late Alexander McQueen and Burberry. Both Alexander McQueen sunglasses and Burberry sunglasses are fashionably oversized and perfect for surreptitious celeb gazing. The lenses are also fitted with the best in UV protection and offer brilliant clarity so you can avoid squinting whilst watching the tennis unfold. Fingers crossed for sunshine everyone!
Hopefully in a fortnight we’ll be celebrating Andy Murray winning the championship, which will be the icing on the cake of our great British celebration!

Burberry Back to the Forefront of Fashion

The designer brand Burberry was founded in 1856 by 21 year old Thomas Burberry who was a former draper’s apprentice. Thomas began his career in fashion when he opened up his own shop located in Basingstoke in Hampshire which specialised in selling waterproof overcoats. The shop quickly became popular in the area and his name and profile as a designer was raised. Thomas Burberry is a classic example of a designer who had always maintained a strong passion for all the elements associated with fashion design and his love of fine, high quality fabrics – something which Burberry is iconic for today, ultimately led him to becoming so highly regarded from a young age.
One of the most popular items created by Burberry which has also led to its iconic status was designed in 1914 and is still today a wardrobe staple for many – the Burberry trench coat. The design element which completely defines
Burberry from other brands without the need of a physical label is the famous Burberry check which with its black, tan, and red pattern is known as the “Haymarket check” or the “Burberry classic check” and this is what lines the famous trench coats and is still found on perfume bottles, clothing and accessories including the range of Burberry sunglasses. The coat went through years of re-design and improvement, was finally launched in 1924 and is now a timeless classic.
Burberry is regarded as one of the most sought after luxury brands and favoured for its exquisite and classic style. Fans and customers of the brand even include Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales.
When a label has existed for such a long period of time, it is inevitable that it will need re-vamping in order to keep up with current trends and style. Near the end of the 20th century, Rose Marie Bravo was brought in to modernise the image of
Burberry and she was responsible for rebuilding the Burberry brand in the UK and Europe and ensured it was only sold to select luxury retailers which has created a sought after and elite image. She also hired Italian-American Roberto Menichetti as her new head designer in 1998, who quickly made Burberry’s Prorsum brand the hot brand for any fashionista to be seen in. Now Burberry has branded stores and boutiques around the world, and the products maintain a classic, practical and functional use with a completely unique sense of style. Whilst balancing its classic styling with contemporary trend injections Burberry is popular among a wide age range and respected for its significant historical value.
Burberry sunglasses are one of the most modern additions to the Burberry line can be described as beautifully classic but have modern twists to keep the style in keeping with current trends and appeal to a wide range of ages. The iconic Burberry check pattern is also featured on many of the styles, some more subtle such as on a section of the arms. Due to Burberry having such an extensive history, it has been featured in many fashion exhibitions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the collection includes ranges for men, women and children as well as swimwear and accessories including the fantastic range of Burberry sunglasses.
During the 1970s, the brand became associated with the British football scene which led it to bing labelled as the brand for ‘chavs’ or ‘hooligans’. However, during the past two years, with models such as Agyness Deyn, Lily Donaldson and Lara Stone being featured in the Burberry advertising campaigns and the brand being focused upon in publications such as Vogue, Harpers Bizarre and Tatler, the Burberry image has reverted back to its rightful classic and sought after status and loved for its elegant and refined and typically English dishevelled and effortless style.
