The History Behind the Iconic Armani

December 17, 2009
Posted by David

Giorgio Armani is one of the most iconic and influential designers of our time whose range of clothing and accessories are favoured for their unique and exquisite Italian style. The designer was born in Piacenza, Italy in 1934 and found his way into the fashion industry in the 1960’s. Unlike many designers who have always strived to pursue their passion for fashion from a young age, Armani was a late starter as originally went to study medicine at Milan University before falling into the fashion industry via his first job.

Armani’s first taste of the fashion industry came when he became a window dresser at a large Milanese department store named La Rinascente. Renowned for being a perfectionist, he developed a unique style which was incredibly classic and chic and later following trips to the UK, this was further enhanced. Italy may be largely regarded as the centre of the fashion universe, but whilst in the UK Armani was very much inspired by the shop windows and how the mannequins were styled to perfection with bursts of vibrant colour. Favouring the essence of UK style, Armani decided to bring back some bright yellow cardigans that he had seen in a small boutique and sell them in Il Rinascente. Of course, people thought this was a crazy idea and that the cardigans were far too bold, brash, and elitist for the Italian traditional fashion. However, Armani was adamant that the English style could transcend to Italy and carried on regardless and the cardigans proved very popular. Following a job as a designer for Nino Cerruti’s men’s clothing company, Hitman, Ungaro and Zegna in 1974, Armani decided to go it alone and introduced his own menswear label. His first womenswear collection came only a year later following his success.

The success of Giorgio Armani is due to his ability to create clothing and accessories that people can actually wear. This may sound quite ironic since that is the job of every designer, but where designer fashion is concerned many people feel intimidated by it as feel it is too over the top, unsuitable and unwearable in relation to their lifestyle. Armani bases his design inspirations on everyday and regular people, believing that clothes should be made to be worn not just seen on the catwalks. Armani was responsible for making the feared power suit of the 1980’s a little softer, demure and practical and Armani’s collections are elegant, understated and can be mixed with a variety of other pieces.

The collection of Armani sunglasses are an extension of his range of clothing and portray that same essence of wearability but with an original style that can be sound in the form of bold patterns and  colours which injects a funky and high trend edge. Where being bold is concerned, accessories allow you to be a little braver and thus Armani has created a superb range of sunglasses that vary from high trend through to classic and everything in between which ensures you can get just the right balance of Armani style.

Style icons who have appeared in Armani advertising campaigns include both Victoria and David Beckham and singer Beyonce and the number of A List fans of the brand is endless! A legendary designer of our time that allows each and every individual to look and feel stylish, classic and ultra sophisticated!

Celebrities favour Armani Sunglasses

May 15, 2009

You don’t get much more ‘designer’ than Giorgio Armani. You’ll have seen pictures of the man before, generally with his arm wrapped around the waist of a glamorous actress or a gorgeous model. A big happy, toothy white grin in a tanned face on the body of a diminutive, distinguished, older man.

Designers often use high profile figures in their advertising campaigns and Armani is no stranger to this ploy. As a friend of the Beckhams and inspired by their good looks and global influence, Armani has used the couple in his current underwear campaign to great effect. Both Victoria and David are known across the world for their amazing bodies and love of fashion and Armani’s campaign has them posing seductively together and separately in beautifully designed underwear.

As well as sporting masses of Armani on the red carpet, celebrities are often seen out and about in stylish Armani sunglasses. Current favourites include model ‘9426/S’ which Lauren Conrad from The Hills wears, Russell Crowe was spotted at the premiere for his latest film ‘State of Play’ wearing Armani’s GA 567/S Aviators and wraparound model ‘9436’ is worn frequently by Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman.

Armani sunglasses are both stylish and chic. With a vast range to choose from, Shade Station has the freshest and most current styles to suit your face shape and help you emulate your favourite celebrity!

Diggin’ Fossil

March 10, 2009

Fossil are perhaps best known for the quirky tins in which their branded wristwear is sold. These novel tins have created a buzz for Fossil since the company began repackaging their watches in 1989 – to such an extent that they almost threaten to overshadow the wristwear itself. The tins have become highly collectible and are traded in markets and antique shops around the world. The graphic design teams that create them have won countless awards and there’s even been a coffee table book published in the humble tin’s honour.

All this for a watch?! What is clear is that when you buy a Fossil watch you are entering into the history books and at the same time acquiring your very own collectible product from the get go!

Fossil watches have a vintage, irreverent style – designed with creativity and humour which extends throughout their collections. The company’s tag line is “What vintage are you?” pointing to the fact that the brand have a timepiece to suit everybody’s style and taste.

Not just a pretty (watch) face, or the sum of their tins (sorry!), Fossil have been approached by a number of big name luxury brands to create licensed watch lines for them. These include Adidas, Burberry, Diesel, DKNY, Armani, Michael Kors and Marc by Marc Jacob, all of whom Fossil now design, manufacture and distribute for. It is very apparent therefore that Fossil’s own watches are made by the very best in the business and are of the highest quality. This is further backed up by celebrity designer collaborations. Fossil’s current partnership with Philippe Starck, a media darling and the visionary designer who transformed major hotels across the globe is a coup for the brand and just goes to show how innovative and appealing Fossil watches really are.

Sunglasses Overshadow the ‘It’ Bag

August 19, 2008
Posted by David

During 2008, it has been reported that the sales of sunglasses have overtaken the sales of designer handbags. Apparently the typical Balenciaga tote addict has now turned her spending attention towards the latest designer sunglasses. Statement shades are now the one luxury item that shoppers are still willing to spend their hard earned cash on and have thus being labelled as the new replacement ‘image item’ among teenage girls and women.

The reason as to why sunglasses are the new must have accessory is likely due to the fact that they are a more accessible and economical way of purchasing a high end luxury brand item. Every season there is a new style available which immediately captures the attention of the fashion conscious but this is nevertheless, a far more affordable alternative to buying the latest ‘it’ bag. For example, during 2007 and 2008, the main sunglasses trend has come in the form of aviators and vintage Jackie O styles which immediately conveys a luxurious and glamorous style statement.

The rise in popularity of sunglasses has also triggered further designers such as Tom Ford and Armani to catch on and attach their names the latest style of frames. They have also designed unisex versions making them more appealing to both men and women. It isn’t either just women who are contributing to the high sales as men are also using sunglasses as a way of conveying their sense of style and masculine identity.

Sunglasses are so much more than just a simple accessory; they provide the ability to create a real designer fashion statement which suits the individual without breaking the bank. The fact that they have overtaken the sales of the latest ‘it’ bag is certainly proof of that.

The perfect pair

July 5, 2008
Posted by David

Falling in love could see you starting to look at the world through rose-tinted glasses, but it would seem the latest trend for lovebirds is to actually start sporting matching specs. Only yesterday Kelly Osbourne and new beau Luke Worrell were seen hand-in-hand wearing identical yellow and purple sunnies. Catching up on a spot of shopping in Beverley Hills before they met up with Mrs O, we hope the Chanel boutique managed to dissuade the young lovers from buying exactly the same outfits too. It’s not the first time they’ve been snapped looking like peas in a pod either; last month they both left a Covent Garden nightclub wearing heart-shaped shades.

But it’s not just Kelly and Luke that have been doing a Posh and Becks. Model of the moment Agyness Deyn and best bud, fashion designer Henry Holland have also been pictured wearing near-identical shades, (and shirts, shorts, shoes and hairstyles), and Paris Hilton and Benji Madden have also been accused of falling victim to the latest fashion.

So why is wearing the same specs so appealing, and is there such a thing as unisex sunglasses? Well it would seem the answer is yes! Whether you’re rocking the androgynous look á la Deyn, or simply fancy borrowing your other half’s stylish sunnies, unisex shades won’t leave you looking out of place. And they’re more common than you think. Whether you’re a label lover or a plain Jane, brands including Armani, Versace, Marc Jacobs, Rayban and Oakley all have a fantastic selection to choose from. The only problem you’ll face is who gets to wear them first – you or your loved one? It’s only then when you’ll realise why a matching pair might be the only way to go.
