Heritage, innovation and excellence – Bulova Watches at Shade Station
Bulova Watches have an incredibly rich history which stretches right back to 1875 when the company founder, Joseph Bulova emigrated to America from Bohemia at the age of nineteen. He opened a small jewellery store in New York and following his massive success, Bulova established his first plant dedicated to the total production of wristwatches and their components. Manufactured in the plant’s central building in Bienne, Switzerland, the movements were made via a production line, allowing a quality and standardization never before seen in the world of horology.
Bulova Watches were the very first brand to introduce technology which ensured completely accurate time on all of their watches across the range. To do so the Bulova Observatory was constructed in 1920 in Manhattan, the first facility of its kind on top of a skyscraper. On the top floor of the Observatory an expert mathematician took readings that were simultaneously and electrically recorded on a chronograph located in the lower floors of the building. There, the Setting and Timing units used the data to set the time on all of the company’s timepieces in the most accurate way possible.
Inventors of the very first clock radio, Bulova moved onto focusing on future sales and created the very first TV advertisement. A simple map of America was shown and the tag line read “America runs on Bulova time”. This advert is the grandfather of commercials around the world and personified the brand as a whole; simple, effective, original. But rather than just settling for what Bulova had achieved already, they created the Accutron technology. On the first ever moon walk, an Accutron timer was placed in the Sea of Tranquility by the Apollo XI astronauts; this was part of a seismometer experiment to transmit critical lunar data.
It is clear to see every second of this rich heritage in today’s modern watches. With Richard Branson as their Brand Ambassador, they really do exemplify a continued dedication to technology, creativity and excellence. Take a look at our full range of Bulova Watches right here at Shade Station and treat yourself or a loved one to a piece of real timekeeping history.
