Timex is a watch company that has a history of over 150 years. Founded in America in 1854, the Timex brand firmly established themselves as a major player in the watch industry and in the years since, have remained as one of the most renowned in the world; respected because of their functional, stylish, reliable, high quality and affordable watches.

Timex watches began back in 1854 but the company was then known as Waterbury Clock. Waterbury Clock was the first company in America to manufacture affordable clocks to everyday consumers and their shelf and mantel clocks were reliable, high quality and rapidly became popular throughout America, with many homes owning at least one.

It was in the 1880's that Waterbury embarked on marketing its first watch, which was known as the Yankee pocket watch. Between 1880 and 1920, Waterford worked with mass marketer Robert H. Ingersoll and sold over 40,000,000 of their Yankee model watches throughout America and Europe.

The brand continued to grow in popularity and in 1917, Waterbury Clock manufactured America's first popular wristwatch as a result of a request submitted by the US army during World War 1. Members of US military wore the model, which was named the Midget pocket watch.

However, in the early 1930’s business became slower due to the Great Depression and the company needed to produce something innovative, exciting and affordable as a way of a comeback. An opportunity arose with Walt Disney and the brand designed a watch featuring Mickey Mouse on the dial in addition to the Walt Disney branding. The watch was a huge success and these Disney watches are still incredibly popular on the style scene today and have become sought after collector’s items. In the 1940's the company was renamed the US Time company and slightly diversified into manufacturing timing devices for artillery and anti-aircraft machines.

It wasn't until the 1950's that Timex watches launched the product that would make them one of the world's largest watchmakers. In 1950, they manufactured one of the most popular mechanical watches ever marketed in North America. The watch was named Timex, the brand name also changed to Timex, and the hugely successful marketing campaign including the famous slogan ‘Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking’ lead to Timex rapidly growing to become the largest brand in America. By the end of the 1950's one out of every three watches sold in America was a Timex model.

Having secured the monopoly on the low-price watch markets, during the 1960's and 1970's Timex expanded its collections and began to produce higher end and more style-focused watches. Today Timex produces a full line of men's and ladies watches in an array of designs ranging from classic and demure to fashion forward and trend inspired.

Since the 1990’s Timex have launched some of the most iconic and innovative watches in history. The brand is renowned for incorporating the Indigo nightlight into its watches and other key models include varied versions of the Ironman; geared towards different sports and fitness requirements, the Helix watch, the Expedition watches and the E-Compass watches to name only a few.

Timex today specialises in producing a range of exceptionally high quality and durable watches that are affordable and accessible to everyone. The current and contemporary Timex watch collections are definitely more trend-focused, vibrant and many with a sporty aesthetic. The sports inspired designs came about in the 1980’s when inexpensive and basic watches were becoming more popular and the competition greater. Timex decided to revamp its image and focus more heavily on the sports fashion industry and appeal to a broader consumer base. Today Timex watches still maintain this trend but are also most popular and regarded for their functional abilities which include water resistance, night lights, lap measurers and even the ability to transmit signals to your iPod so that when exercising your music will match your pace. These sports style watches come in a variety of striking colours as well as neutral tones and are designed to be durable and robust yet still stylish.

Recognising that not every consumer may require these special features, Timex also has a range of more classically styled watches for men and women which include jewellery inspired features and are incredibly chic and striking at affordable prices. Many Timex watches boast simplistic and modern designs that include precisely positioned adornments such as grid patterned crowns and stylised ‘T’ minute hands which conveys the brand’s ‘less is more’ philosophy and ensures that each Timex watch possesses style staying power and will remain fashionable for years to come.

The main objective of the Timex brand is to provide high quality and reliable watches to the everyday consumer and incorporate as much style choice into the collections as possible, in addition to providing the ultimate watch to compliment and enhance your fitness regime and help monitor your health, fitness levels and performance. The Timex brand is one that has always strived to make each product the best it can possibly be and consistently continues to do so, making each Timex watch a worthy yet accessible investment.
