The design duo behind the D&G designer brand are two gentlemen named Domenico Dolce, born in 1958 in Sicily, and Stefano Gabbana, born in 1962, in Milan. The two designers are responsible for launching one of the most iconic Italian designer labels which is famed for making ‘stars look like stars’. Their sexy and ultra feminine styles are loved by Hollywood A Listers including Isabella Rossellini, Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman, Katy Perry, Kylie, Tamsin Egerton and Madonna to name only a few and their creations continually dazzle on the red carpet at prestigious award ceremonies year after year. What is signature and favoured about D&G is the way the brand entwines its own Mediterranean inspired style with a typically English and classic edge.
The duo met while working as assistants in an atelier in Milan. Sharing a passion of the baroque, they first united as a design team in 1985 when the organisers of the Milano Collezioni invited them to take part in a fashion show to launch ‘New Talents’. The following year, they presented their first independent women's ready-to-wear show which proved incredibly successful and the official design partnership and friendship was established. Since then, they have designed an array of womenswear collections, menswear collections, signature fragrances, cosmetics, accessories and eyewear including the range of D&G sunglasses, and have brand stores all around the world.
The D&G brand is heavily inspired by the eclectic theme of thrift shop style Bohemia and the deep toned animal prints that have often being featured on D&G creations have been described by fashion experts in the industry as ‘haute hippydom’. The duo maintain a passion for Italy's prestigious film history and therefore, when they design, they want the garments, accessories or overall look to convey a story and possess meaning as opposed to being designed for the sake of it. D&G firmly believe that they should be creating only the finest quality and most flattering clothes that refrain from simply relying on current trends. The duo even admitted that they wouldn't mind if their only contribution to fashion history was a black bra if it was a great fitting and flattering one!
D&G has also become so popular and highly regarded in the fashion industry due to its range of signature styles that make each piece instantly recognisable to the D&G brand. These styles include the concept of underwear-as-outerwear; corsets and bra fastenings for example worn over shirts or blouses, which is a trend that regularly circulates throughout the seasons with many High Street brands emulating this D&G look. Pinstripe suits, elaborately printed and embroidered coats and the use of dramatic black with a hint of elegant gothic appeal are all typical design traits of D&G. The brand likes to make any female feel that with the use of well designed clothing, they can be as glamorous as they have ever desired. Some of their simple suits or tailored shirts for example are classic and demure, but designed to reveal a hint of sexiness which is achieved in the specific cut of the garment.
The collections are always at the forefront of fashion, not only due to the designs but also because of the elaborate and bold advertising campaigns that are renowned for making women look incredibly powerful, feminine, confident and sexy. Some of the advertising campaigns are also known for their rather risqué content and certainly grab the attention of the audience but in a creative manner that is also reflective of the overall theme and essence of the brand.
Despite their immense success, Dolce & Gabbana are a great deal younger than the founders of some of their competitors including notorious Italian fashion houses such as Versace and Armani and the duo modestly claim that luck has played its part in their success. By 1997, their company reported a turnover of £400 million, and both designers stated that at 40 years old they would retire. Luckily their passion for fashion and design has failed to subside and they are very much still ‘at work’!
