Eastpak was originally founded in 1960 by Monte Goldman and began as 'Eastern Canvas Products' designing and manufacturing products including backpacks, duffel bags and knapsacks used by the armed forces; providing them with durable and robust ways of transporting their belongings. It was in1976 that Goldman’s son Mark observed that students were actually using military style bags to carry around their school books and day-to-day belongings and that the style had become quite a trend. Mark persuaded his father to begin making a range of day bags geared towards students or for those who needed something practical but stylish to use as a day bag. This first collection marked the new brand Eastpak brand name and it quickly gained popularity, becoming a hit with college and university students who favoured the slightly alternative and cool style. The bags still had the same function and durability but also had a distinctively stylish edge that made the brand completely unique. Eastpak used Cordura fabric material to make the products and therefore the bags were more durable and stronger than other brands and also great value for money which from the perspective of students, made Eastpak a great choice. Eastpak also began to experiment with different aesthetic styles and patterns and made a range of bags which incorporated vibrant colours and vivid bold prints which created a youthful, fun and uniquely stylish association with the brand – it is still favoured for these reasons today. Eastpak now produces a great collection of colourful and patterned rucksacks, bags, luggage, bum bags, clothing and other accessories that successfully combine style, utility and value for money. The brand also includes a ‘Girls Only’ section with cool shopper bags and day bags with a feminine but super funky edge incorporating fresh colours and offering something a little alternative. Eastpak is also very much prominent in the sports, arts and music industries, taking part, sponsoring and reporting on key events such as the Eastpak Hobo Tour (cycling through Berlin), and creating campaigns to promote the underground music scene. Always keen to get in on the action, Eastpak is definitely the ultra cool way to carry your items around in confident, authentic style.
