The watch brand Animal was founded in 1987 and a great example of how a product was created to solve a problem. Two surfers were becoming increasingly frustrated about losing their watches whilst they were in the water and no matter how durable or strong the watch claimed to be, each one tried could never seem to endure the extreme water conditions. Eager to rectify this, the two surfers set up a workshop in a bedroom and began concepting and designing new straps made of webbing and velcro. They firstly sold the straps to their surfer friends and used the profit to fund trips to Australia and Hawaii whereby they sold more of the straps to a wider market. Soon it was discovered that the simplicity yet effectiveness of the strap design enabled the product to diversify into the snowboarding, skating and mountain biking market and thus after the huge success in the sporting industry the Animal brand was officially born. Animal then extended their products to making actual watches, incorporating the original strap and now the watches are favoured all over the globe, renowned for their durable, functional and extremely cool looking watches.
